AGEING Westlife fans can look forward to future care after singer Shane Filan's nursing home development in his home town was given the green light.
An Bord Pleanala has approved the ¤5m nursing home project at Knappagh Road close to Sligo town centre, despite objections by local residents' groups.
Shafin Development, owned by Shane Filan and his brother Finbarr, will shortly go ahead with the construction of the 80-bed facility, which it hopes to complete by next June.
The brothers are also about to begin construction of a 50-bed nursing home in Dromahair and a neighbourhood centre in Carraroe at a combined cost of ¤10m.
The three developments could create upwards of 300 jobs and inject ¤6m or more into the local economy, the brothers have estimated.
"That's similar to a factory opening in Sligo, so there is something to be positive about," said Shane.
But planning permission for the nursing home did not receive universal approval. Residents living next to the proposed home yesterday expressed concerns that An Bord Pleanala had excluded observations made by the HSE as a condition of the planning permission.
Rathedmond Residents' Association spokesman Jim O'Sullivan said residents would not rule out seeking a judicial review if their fears were not allayed.
However, Finbarr Filan insisted the home would meet the required standards.
